Murdo, SD
You can talk about a huge cosmopolitan city, but then you ain't talking about Murdo, SD. Left Fargo this afternoon after having lunch with Ken, Melanie, and Michelle (Karen showed up at the Cajun Cafe during our meal).
Saturday night we all went over to Karen's for "shoopnoodles" (you can look up the correct spelling). Fun evening. Melissa, Melanie, and Vi were at three separate frying pans making them. One was plain, one was with sauerkraut, and the other was with cream. Great meal and one which we really enjoy every time we come back to North Dakota. Another fun evening with good food, conversation and wine. After dinner, it was fun listening to the "girls" taking about events which had transpired during their growing up years. I'm sure Karen was surprised at some of the events which she didn't know about :-). The Virginia/Purdue game was on in the background - another close one which Virginia eventually won. NOTE: We won't talk about today's game between Duke and Michigan.
Back to today's events. We decided to leave today (Sunday) because people had other commitments and it really was time for us to start back home. We packed up while Ken and Melanie were at church and then drove up to Argusville to see Vi's old home town. We didn't drive out to the farm or to the cemetery, but perhaps we'll do that when we come back in June for Reilee's wedding.
After lunch, we started out on I-94 heading west and then dropped south on US 83 just east of Bismarck. Fields are really flooded and the ditches are full of water. As we traveled south on 83, it's just rolling farmland. From the looks of the water in the fields, it still looks like it'll be a while before anyone gets in the fields. As we drove down 83, we noticed signs that it was the Welk Highway. Then as we entered Strasburg, there was a huge sign that it was the birthplace of Lawrence Welk. Everyone now - and a one and a two, etc.
Drove through Pierre (quick what's the capital of South Dakota) - I know that's an old saying, but I'm just trying to keep everyone up on their geography. Crossed the Missouri - very wide and flowing freely.
We did come up with a new expression during our trip. As we were leaving the restaurant the night we arrived, I started out the door and the hostess was going to hold the door open. I said she might have to wait a while because the group was still saying their goodbyes. She said - Oh, that's a Minnesota Farewell. You get up and start to say goodbye and then someone thinks of something else to say. Long story short - it takes about thirty minutes from the time you stand up to the time you finally walk out the door. Of course, then it's a few more minutes out in the parking lot. That length of time is directly proportionate to the outside temperature!
We were originally going to stay in Pierre, but the Best Western was converted to another brand, so we continued on down 83 to I-90 where we ended up in Murdo. Looks like it's a real touristy town, but geared to the summer traffic because hardly anything is open now. Of course, it was 8:00 p.m. when we arrived, but even so you would think there would be a restaurant open. Finally ended up at Subway at the Pilot gas station. Gourmet dining, at its' best! Oh well, merlot makes any meal a good experience.
Tomorrow it's off south to I-80 and then we don't have to worry about any more directions. Get on I-80, exit for lunch, get back on I-80, exit for dinner and hotel, get back on I-80, and repeat.
